Am I Addicted to Social Media?

As part of the rightly named ‘selfie generation’, anyone who’s anyone had a social media presence growing up.

I don’t remember a time without social media honestly. It’s always been a normal part of my routine to wake up and reach straight for my phone to see what I’ve missed. The siren call is too strong to resist.

Checking social media takes up quite a large chunk of my day when I think about it. But that’s normal – isn’t it?

I have had a profile on most social platforms at some time or other, but now stick to what I see as the basics: Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, Pinterest and of course LinkedIn. (That’s quite a lot of profiles isn’t it?)

The question of my addiction raised its ugly head thanks to a colleague. Said colleague had chosen to have a social media ‘black out’ whilst she is on holiday. She posted a poll about it on twitter (ironically) and everybody voted that she wouldn’t succeed.

I started thinking – could I not check social media for 9 days straight?

9 days is nothing, of course I could. But the fact of the matter is – I don’t want to.

I love social media.

It’s not that I can’t not go on it, it’s that I won’t. And that’s a whole other form of addiction when you think about it.

I do not want to give up social media even if I could.

I have no doubt that members of other generations could probably take a social media hiatus with no issue, but for me, it’s just not an option.

Is this unhealthy? Probably.

But it’s all I’ve ever known.
